Dr. Billy Rutherford, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist on the posttraumatic stress disorder clinical team (PCT) at the Hershel “Woody” Williams Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Huntington, WV where he provides assessment, psychotherapy, and clinical supervision. Dr. Rutherford is a trained provider of a variety of evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD and trauma-related disorders including Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy for PTSD (CBCT-PTSD). He serves as a subject matter expert (SME) for two Office of Healthcare Innovation and Learning (OHIL) clinical pilot projects utilizing immersive reality technologies for in vivo exposure therapy with VA Immersive. One of these projects includes the development of novel, 360-degree video environments for in vivo exposure specific to Veteran populations.
Dr. Rutherford is also consulting on other projects leveraging immersive technology for clinical uses with couples and emotionally evocative memorial sites and monuments for Veterans. He completed training utilizing Bravemind for virtual reality imaginal exposure with Dr. Albert “Skip” Rizzo. He is a former training consultant with VA Family Service’s national roll-out of Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT). Dr. Rutherford is the Immediate Past President of the West Virginia Psychological Association (WVPA). He earned his Psy.D. in clinical Psychology at Marshall University.
